A CIRCLE OF FRIENDS
Evelyn Lang
Robin White
Tom Clausen

ten thousand suns -
a field of dandelions
sparkles with morning dew

around the bonfire
a circle of friends

beneath the pine
an old tin cup
bottomless

arms around the tree
her daily hug

shoot the moon
little boys
with rubber bands

the basketball left out
waiting for the next time

dragging nets -
seagulls circle
the fishing trawler

collecting in the tide pool
sand dollars

the toddler follows
our old cat around
- with water dish

a crown of autumn leaves
for my one true love

around the globe
it seems
just to return home

to who knows where
the geese pass loudly

hands folded behind
the monk walk and talk
lapping the pond

horses neck to neck
under a full moon

waiting for
the pumpkins to ripen
Jack Frost

molasses muffins
set out to cool

Thanksgiving Day parade -
bicycle spokes filled
with crepe paper flowers

skating on thin ice
maple leaves

the sweet-toothed child
demanding more syrup
for soggy pancakes

viewing the sunset through
popsicle-colored icicles

for winter solstice
a tea light
in each window

with the nub of a pencil
he sketches the sunrise

a rustling sound
through the pinegrove
-- trickster coyote

yawning cones
the conifers wake

in the woods
watchful eyes
deer, owl, bunting

persistently driven
the steady spring snow

where sky meets the sea
the gentle curve
of the earth

up through the decay of leaves
hundreds of snowdrops

magically
the moon rides through
rushing clouds

a new red bandanna
for scarecrow's old straw hat

while laying a hundred eggs
the praying mantis
looks over its shoulder

the sky darkening
as he smokes the hive

making honey fudge
no lack of help
