Nanao Sakaki is the famous wandering sage of Japan who has traveled widely and made many friends in the USA. The earlier poems were written in Japanese and translated into English but later he wrote in English as well. His philosophy can be summed up in this poem which opens Break the Mirror (which has a foreword by Gary Snyder).

Read books
If you have time to read
Walk into the mountain, desert and ocean
If you have time to walk
sing songs and dance

White Letter Poems. Fumi Saito. Translated by Hatsue Kawamura and Jane Reichhold. 100 tanka from Saito's 11 poetry collections. Perfect bound, 8.5 x 5.5, 128 pp., biography. ISBN: 0-944676-23-5. $10.00 ppd. AHA Books. Fumi Saito was the Poet Laureate of Japan in 1997, chosen for her contribution to tanka literature. Her poems spanning the beginning of WWII to the present, bring the unique woman's voice to the changes of the times, not only for her country, but for herself. Greatly beloved by her people, Fumi Saito takes tanka writing to new levels in both Japanese and now in English. The first poem in the book from which the title was taken. Fumi also means 'letter' in Japanese.

bullet One Hundred Frogs : From Matsuo Basho to Allen Ginsberg by Hiroaki Sato.1 Edition Paperback, 127 pages. List: $7.95 -- Amazon.com Price: $7.15 -- You Save: $0.80(10%) Published by Weatherhill. Publication date: May 1,1995. Dimensions (in inches): 4.93 x 7.08 x .33. ISBN: 0834803356. Availability: This item usually shipped within 2-3 days.

Don't be confused. Sato also wrote a book titled One Hundred Frogs which contains a lot information about renga (and is now considered by Amazon.com to be hard-to-find). The book offered here is just ONE chapter of that book. If you are interested in seeing how many people could translate Basho's famous frog haiku into how many different variations and see a too cute little painted frog jump when you flip the pages, you might like this book in spite of its inflated price.

Earle Stone's depth of understanding of Chinese and Japanese art (he was an appraiser and connoisseur of antiques, as well as artist/writer) gives his absolutely traditional haiku the ring of authenticity as well as showcases of humanness and foil for his celebrated sense of humor. Arranged according to seasons, five to a page, Stone's haiku are not only works of art in themselves, but to read them is an education in Oriental lifestyle.
